Concealed Hinge for Overlay Closet door

9/29/14

Need to make several pairs of large closet doors that will match a panel wrap around the closet.

The doors themselves will likely be around 1 1/2" thick, 70-100 lbs is my guess. They'd like a concealed hinge system. The overlay at this point is undetermined, I'll wait to see what the hinge requires (if it exists).

Is there anything anyone can recommend? Haven't really had any luck searching the net. Glass door hinges seem to keep coming up but they are for thin panels. Help.

Would need to know additional details but the 150° or 175° opening no bore hinges below are honkin' strong and versatile

Thanks Fred, but those hinges have a 1" door thickness limit. My doors will be in the 1 1/2" thickness range.

Leo,

The Salice "F" series hinge can be used with doors up to 1-1/2" thick.

There would be a couple more details to check like the width of the doors and if there is anything, like another door or wall adjoining each door. If these doors are in sequence, the gap between each door will need to be considered. Also, do the doors have a square edge (like drawing) or is there a profile.

The height of the doors will also need to be considered to determine the correct number of hinges to use.

Here is a drawing with a 1-1/2" thick door to give you an idea of the possibility:

Thanks Dennis, so far that's one of the better ones I've seen, was hoping to get more that 94 degrees on the swing. It's in the contentions at least. Thanks.

You will not find a European style concealed hinge for a 1-1/2" thick, square edge door that opens more than 94 degrees.

One possible solution however would be to use the 155 degree thick door hinge.
This has a maximum door thickness of 1-1/4" for a square edge door but if your door has a profile edge, this could work.

If it must be a square edge door, you could still use this hinge with a restrictor clip to stop the door at 125 degrees.

A mockup first would be recommended.

Yep has to be a square edge, however I might be able to convince them to go with a 1 1/4" door. I'd just have to find 5/8" material in the 2 species I'm using for these doors. Thanks.

A three-ply lamination will give better stability (as pointed out to me on this very forum several years ago). The two faces need to be balanced but the core does not need to be the same thickness as the faces. Closet doors have more temperature variance between the two sides than most interior doors so warping is more of an issue.

The doors will likely be 2 sheets of particleboard veneer glued together.

I'm trying to visualize a scenario that would require two species for the types of doors you are mentioning? I'm assuming veneered flush doors? Interested in the design, is it an "s" with two contrasting wood colors or something similar? I love to see unique door designs, I'm getting a little off topic but if you feel like responding please do.

They are interested in wrapping the outside of a closet with walnut panels (plywood laid out in random brick style) and the doors themselves will match this design so they look like the walls. The inside of the closet will have a system made from maple, so I thought it would look nice if the door inside matched. The walnut exterior would be horizontal and the interior would be vertical, it would be wrapped with a walnut edge band.

Look up Soss brand hinges. They sound like what you want, but I'm not sure they make ones large enough.

Also, there is no adjustment

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
