Is there a market? Child safety latch

Hello,

I am a cabinetmaker, although not full time, now. I've been working on a design for a child safety latch, for drawers/doors. Most products on the market are geared towards the home owner to install. There are many drawback/issues relating to current products and their fitting to different cabinet applications etc.

Was wondering how often cabinet makers and cabinet manufacturers are faced with this issue beforehand with their customer?

Is there a market for marketing direct to cabinet manufacturers for installation of child safety latches before leaving the shop? I would think a customer would be willing to spend more in child-proofing if option was available to them from the cabinet source.

Thanks for any input!

I used these in my own house and we have used them several times with customers. I think that the design works well and they are not expensive so I think that it would be hard to sell something that works a lot better and at the same or lower price. These can be installed by the homeowner but most homeowners are not going to want to drill a whole into the back of there door. If you do not have a good stop on your drill bit you will come through the front of the door. They provide a plastic one in the pack and I made the mistake of using it on the first door in my kitchen.

Thanks Ryan. Yes I am familiar with these locks. Overall they have pretty good reviews. Some of the draw backs and negative reviews though are; The key magnet needs to always be used/reached for. The magnet may wear on the cab finish. Don't think these would work well on drawers in general, especially a top drawer.

Then as far as install goes it requires some decision making on where exactly to screw them in.

I've never had any customer inquire about safety latches in a kitchen. I think this would be a big uphill battle with cabinet makers.

We don't do kitchens for the most part, but our customers would simply tell the nanny to do her job. No locks required.

Anytime I hear someone talking about making children's anything, I immediately think about liability insurance. Have a lock fail and a kid drink bleach, and I'm not sure you can have enough insurance. Better talk to some product liability lawyers.

Thanks for everyone's input. Re liability. Many brands in the space that sell on Amazon, provide a legal disclaimer like Safety1st does Legal Disclaimer:

"IN NO EVENT, REGARDLESS OF CAUSE, SHALL Company BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, PUNITIVE OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER ARISING UNDER BREACH OF CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), STRICT LIABILITY OR OTHERWISE, AND WHETHER BASED ON THIS AGREEMENT OR OTHERWISE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES"

But that doesn't mean they won't get sued anyways!

I just got done recently re-doing a kitchen, ie adding new drawers, pullouts etc and the client wanted all the base cab drawers/doors baby proofed. So it go me thinking and looking into products on the market. And realized all the short comings for let's say top drawers, frameless stack of drawers. Inset drawers etc.

So I went about trying to design things 32mm system compatible where it would be standardized and easy to install. Then if asked to do so a cabinetmaker or manufacturer could pre install these latches at a higher price then the DIYer products. Homeowner given that option and need might say $ 750 , no problem. Nothing to get excited about but...

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
