Hello
On the hunt for a SLR, anyone had any experience with the Oliver 4920? I really got discourage when my buddy told me that it is made on the same plant as Grizzly, I didn't believe until I compared one to another. Anyone? Thanks

Edi

What is your goal with this machine?
Is it to cut molding blanks?
Is it for glue line ripping?

If it is for molding blanks it would probably be OK.

If it is for glue line I would lean towards a good used machine. Diehl would be my choice. Still in business a pleasure to deal with.

Hopefully guys with Import machines will chime in.

A SLR that has not been maintained to hold glue line tolerances will still cut molder blanks all day long for years.

Lot 304 sold on the 10th looks like a great saw. The first thing to look at is the teeth on the chain. The points on the chain are like a pyramid. As it wears the top of the point is worn away. Lot 304 did not wear that much.

Lot 15 closed on the 10th looks a lot more worn. Notice the larger flat spot. May still be fine for moulder blanks but the chain has more wear on it.

I would prefer lot 304 over any import saw. Even if it needs work over time I am sure I would come out on top. I would have also paid more if needed. That was a GREAT deal.

Good luck! If you are using a table saw now you will be impressed with a SLR.

SLR auction results.

I have run several Diehl ripsaws, and they are the best I have seen. Today's Oliver is not yesterday's Oliver, by the way. Big difference.

The Diehl Factory in Wabash IN, keeps track of all their machines. You can give them a serial number and they will tell you what kind of parts and service it may have received. The responses above about the tracks are right on. Molder blanks are easy to get. A Diehl will rip this 24 hrs a day without breaking a sweat. We could run one for about 40 man hours - 2-1/2 days - to feed a molder for 5 days or more.

I have the Oliver 4910 that is the little brother to the 4920. Basically the same saw just a little lighter and only 7.5hp. I would agree a used Diehl is better. I bought this saw just for the small footprint. Its no more than a Unisaw.

Its my only Eastern import and it has been in service for 12 years or so with no problems. We rip everything on it before further processing but no glue joints. It rips straight if the material is reasonably non cupped or twisted.

No experience with other SLRs but one thing with the triple kick back fingers the board will vibrate a little while you are positioning for the first cut using the laser line. It makes it a little hard to hold the timber steady when starting the cut. You get used to it. The other minor issue is the hand wheel is a little awkward to change height for different thickness. We use a lot of different thickness stock and usually small batches so this is a little annoying but again not a major issue. Overall it has worked out well and like the compact size.

All the castings on these import saws look like they come out of the same factory.

I have the Powermatic version of this saw, have had it for almost 15 years. Run thousands of feet, wait, hundred of thousands. Just ran over 3 thousand feet today and love it. Glue line when I slow it down a little. At max speed, I can run 1000+ LF per hour for straight lining and ripping to width. Only stalled it 3 times, twice with 8/4 Hard Maple and once with 8/4 Hickory, made the mistake of running them at full speed and had a bind. I love my saw and wouldn't go one day without one. Good luck with your decision.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
