Edgebander Glue Roller Problem

I have an edgebander with a glue roller. The problem is that glue builds up at the roller where it meets the glue gate. So if I don't run boards continuously, and wait a minute or two before the next board, it gets a blob of glue on the front.

When I open the gate more, it doesn't happen, but then I have too much glue on the board! When I close the gate all the way it doesn't happen. Its only when the gate is open just enough to have the correct amount of glue on the roller that it happens.

I cleaned out the gate completely by taking it apart and soaking it in lacquer thinner overnight. It came out perfectly clean. Then reinstalled it. But that didn't help.

I'm running Jowat 280.30 unfilled glue at 180c.

Any ideas?

Attached is a picture showing where it happens (with the green arrow showing the worst spot and what ends up going onto the leading edge of the board as a big blob.

This is a video of it happening

Did this happen recently, or was is progressivley worse? How may meters on that roller and gate? Change in glue type?

Been happening since I can remember. We bought the machine new from China about a year ago and have used it very sporadically as we are not at full production quite yet (finding good people to work the shop has proven to be incredibly difficult). It's my first bander so I learned on this machine.

We probably have run 1000-2000 meters total on the machine.

We started with Jowat 280.30, Switched to 280.90 then just switched back to 280.30 hoping it would solve the problem. It did not.

I have a glue gate on my bander, the adjustment is real touchy between not enough glue and too much. I tried Jowat glue and didn't like it. Went back to Doris KS-205. which I run at 205C. At what temperature did Jowat say to run the glue you are using? You might get a thermometer and check that your machine is running the proper temperature, calibration may be off. The glue I am using would not run at your 180C, too cold.

I agree 180 is too cold. We used unfilled for a while and went back to filled. Im not sure why you would get that buildup there as the glue application rod should be turning ccw if your feed chain is moving to the left as in the video. Is that correct?

Another thought is there a gap in the gate? Is it one continuous edge that restricts the glue? Maybe a small worn spot or another thought the gate is not parallel to the roller?

We had sort of the same problem but our machine is much older. We found the top bushing on the glue roller and shaft were worn causing the shaft to wobble. It was impossible to get the glue adjusted properly. When we adjusted the gate for the glue it would work great until we stopped for a minute then the glue would build up.

We figured it out. We adjusted the shoe further out so its more distant from the roller. That allowed us to open the gate up more, which alleviated the glue buildup issue where it was getting trapped between the gate and the roller.

Keep in mind the cabinet part should not touch the glue roller, only the glue.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
