Laminating boards for a top

I have a job at the shop that needs needs a 1-1/2" thick top. I typically avoid gluing up for thickness, but I have some really nice 4/4 material that would be preferable to use instead of the 8/4 thats here. Because of the edge detail, I can hide the glue line if I do a two board glue up, (two pieces of 3/4" glued together. An odd number glue up will not allow me to hide the glue line. So my plan would be to flatten the boards, glue up for thickness, flatten again, then joint, rip and glue up for width. The top will be 42" wide and boards will stay around 6" wide or less. Wondering if this sounds like a problem down the road.

Long term I don't see a problem. Allow time for the moisture from the glue to dissipate before flattening and jointing. Also keep an eye on the ring orientation of the two plies. You don't want to pair flat sawn with radial or rift sawn.

First question that comes to mind is why?
Second question that comes to mind is how did you bid the job?
Like Tom mentioned it probably won’t be a problem as a good glue joint should be stronger than the wood. However you are adding way more glue joints so more potential problem areas if not done right, secondly wood is cheap compared to the labour. I would go buy some wood that is suitable.
I am not trying to be rude, but time is money.

The top is for a desk and the customer is after "character grade" walnut. I've been using a mix of 4, 5 and 8/4 FAS and #1 common, trying to get the best look. My 8/4 was pretty clear, and the #1 was not great. I went ahead and made the top in 8/4 FAS, as that was what I felt most comfortable with. This job is effectively cost plus and the customer is fine with extra labor to get it right.
