5 Piece Doors

Do any of you small shops out there bring in door rail/stile profile in lengths and then cut to size, cope ends & assemble? With cost considerations aside, how does this work out for you? Can you achieve a flat assembly?

Wood doors are basically the last thing we continue to outsource and the lead times are a problem sometimes as we can quickly manufacture all of the other components in a project quickly ( MDF doors, dovetail drawers, box parts etc.).

I'm not looking to get into an outsource vs. manufacture in house debate as I know that's been done a million times on here already.

I would be interested in supplying this kind of product if the situation is right. Big thing I see is both companies have to have the exact same tooling for you to be able to cope accurately. Insert tooling would be a must. Distance between companies would also have to be considered as any distance would incur shipping costs, same town or close I think would be best. You should check and see who has a molder near you.

The matching tooling is the hang up here I think
You'd be better off to run lengths of profile stock and rack them yourself.

Hi Chris, When I used to be a Forman at a molding company we supplied a few door guys and even a few smaller shops lengths of door rail material. What our standard practice was to purchase a set of tooling, coping profile and sticking profile and charge the customer for the coping set and give it to them. Once an agreed amount of molding was run we would rebate them the part of the cost of the coping cutter. Another option would be for you to get the set yourself and give your supplier the sticking profile, and keep the coping cutter. We had about 16 different sticking cutters for 2 different door guys, just have to keep them labeled well with a sample in the box. We also had our customer run a cope cut for us so we could use that as a setup guide.

Actually we supply some other shops with stile & rail stock and s4s for faceframes.
They cut to length and cope the ends.
Seems to work fine.

Chris,

It’s a very smart idea if you are doing paint grade doors with mdf panels. I can imagine having a pile of soft maple thumbnail & square edge stile stock on your shelf. Cut it, cope it. Cut your panels raise/back cut them and assemble your doors.

The whole issue in my mind is it’s only paint grade. The solid wood panels in doors are the most time consuming and require tons of milling. They are the real limiting factor in door construction.
