5 and 6" air sanders

What are you guys using for air sanders? I love my older Dynabrade Silver supreme but they stopped making them and now they have the extreme series. I bought one and it vibrates bad and in my opinion the design is not as good. Think i will get a Surf Prep 6" but they are out of stock. Wonder about the 3m. I use mine on a downdraft machine and i also use Mirka Ceros, and Deros 5 and 6" electric.

All the air sanders I have are Airvantage, I really like them.
I have however been swayed by some of the great folks on this site to electric and my favourite now is the Mirka. I do really like the Surfprep 3x4 but have never used there 5 or 6 inch so can’t comment on them.

We have an airvantage 5 inch electric sander it has a laggy start up, Also when sanding continuous it gets hot after about an hour beeps and shuts off I wouldn't recommend them if you are gonna be using it all day.We were use to the 3m air sander they are really nice just take a bit of air. We would really like to try the Mirka electric sander in a 5 inch. We have the Mirka finish sander and really like that.

The Mirka Deros are amazing...just received the 6"..already had the 5"
Mirka customer service is the best i have ever received too.
I found some of the old stock Dynabrade silver supreme sanders and loaded up on 3 of them. They run smooth as butter. They have been discontinued for quite some time is what i was told.

Mirka Ceros here. Wouldn't go any other way. Deros is bigger and more clumsy, but still works as well.

I thought the same thing about the Deros too but i actually prefer it more after i used it. It just looks clumsy. I have had my Ceros in the shop 5 different times for repair now and they take care of me every time on it.

Mirka Ceros here as well and two Air Vantage electrics. To the post that says they overheat and turn off.. your operators are making the cardinal mistake of bearing down on the sander. I have an employee who constantly has to be reminded that you dont bear down on a sander. They sand better/faster with pretty much zero pressure (faster pad speed/no bogging). Its understood that other electrics dont have this protection but companies like Festool have been endlessly trying to educate owners not to bog/bear down on sanders for years with the sharpie on the pad protocol.

I have a 5" and 6" Airvantage electric and two Mirka Ceros and the biggest nuisance with the Airvantage for us is the fact that it times out on non-use and having to hit the up button on the sander to wake it up after 5 minutes of sitting. I understand the logic there but it'd be nice to be able to shut it off.

Ive sanded with the Airvantage sanders for 10 hours a day and never once had one cut off on overheat. I will say they get warmer than the Mirka's but Ive never had one cut off. Now... put the exact same sander in the hands of "impatient Arthur" who refuses to stop bearing down on the sander and tipping it on edge to dig out a defect, and he will trip that sander on overheat in 5 minutes.

In my world the overheat cutoff is a bit of a blessing because it lets me know who to take off the sanding station ASAP.

I only have the air powered air vantage sanders, I have the dust collection hoses on them and they are fantastic sanders, If you have compressors that are running all day with lots of air I would use the air sanders all the time. However I am small so running the big compressor all the time is more expensive than the Mirka’s, also the electrics are easy to use anywhere as far as site work goes.

Well covered topic on air/vs electric but whether your making a ton of air or not, every CFM of manufactured air has a cost, and a very high cost, whether you making miles of air or only a little air. An air sander consumes the air (more actually) the capacity of a 5HP compressor, plus dryer, plus filters, etc.. So whether your a massive shop or a one man show every time you hit the paddle on the sander you can imagine a 5HP motor, and then some, coming out of your bank account. Its just that simple.

Yesterday i got out my Ceros..Its been maybe a year since its last repair and i hadnt used it because i have been using the Deros. WOW!! Its uncomfortable and does not have a brake compared to the Deros. I guess i will keep it but i will not use it again just because the Deros is so much nicer.
What vacuums are you guys using on your sanders? I use the old Fein Turbo 2 and am getting a new one of those as well. Would you get the HEPA version?

I disagree. The Ceros is slightly smaller than a Dynabrade. I guess it's personal preference.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
