I'm guessing you don't care for any of the current offerings?

Or, what trait are you looking to be improved?

Oh. I'm an idiot. Side mount....

I don't know of one, but I haven't tried any in some time. I didn't think any I had used were remotely good.

Thanks Karl, yeah same for me, but I heard they were ok now.

We just did a job that speced KV 8450 . They actually worked pretty good for a side mount. Cost more than undermounts for some reason...

I was considering this because the contractor uses melamine for cost

Trouble is melamine will likely fail where the clips connect to the front of the drawer

OTOH based on Hen Bob's response there might not be any savings

I’m assuming a melamine drawer. I’d predrill for the screws but add a few drops of Roo glue at screw locations and one on the flattest part of the locking device where it touches the bottom but is located away from adjustment/moving parts. We used to do this with clear caulk because it would hold on Prefinished ply. Worked well.

Pat, I'm in a similar pickle with a "high end" <---(LOL) builder that wants to race to the bottom.

My plausible solution is make the whole drawer from 5/8" and fasten the clips into the drawer bottom rather than just the front of the drawer box. Make the whole drawer from 5/8" then too, and just nest all the parts together on the router.

I can't stand melamine. I might try an import laminated plywood panel on that job if I get it. It's about $20 more per panel, but at least it's not melamine.

Thanks guys

Karl that is what I was thinking too

This is what I do for budget oriented kitchens. I still use Hettich slides and I choose one of the "premium " 5/8" melamine panels from Tafisa in light grey woodgrain or walnut print. I can't bring myself to making them out of see through white board.
I don't think I can live without the adjustability of an undermount anymore

IMHO homeowners don't care how the drawer is made as long as it has soft close and of course doesn't fail

FWIW I asked the contractor if this has been problem, he said he has been using melamine on soft close drawers
for 20 years and this has not been a problem.

Maybe we are overthinking this?

Soft close is certainly easier on the drawer box than having a epoxy side mount. If the customer can't slam them, it's going to have a huge impact on lifespan.

First big cabinet shop I worked for. The melamine drawer sides were French dovetailed into the drawer front. With epoxy slides, those things barely made it through warranty.

Cheap and fast though. LOL

Overkill is my second favorite kind of kill. Slightly over building and over engineering something for very little cost seems like a no brainer to me. I hate service calls for anything.

I think you are making this more difficult than it needs to be. Come up with a drawer system that works for you and stay with it. Trying to make something cheaper will cost you time and money the customer is not paying for. The cost difference between a side mount and under mount guide isn't all that much as compared to re-engineering a new drawer system. In the end you won't save any money.

That said, put a Blum Meta Box drawer in the builders cabinet. They have soft close, are easy to construct and work well. I have never had one break and put them in million dollar homes. Customers don't know the difference so long as it works and doesn't fail.

The comments above re melamine don't clarify whether it's over particle board or MDF. I've used sidemount soft close sides by Accuride and KV with 16mm MDF melamine for twenty years without a problem. I agree that the undermounts are superior for a couple of reasons. The problem I have with the Metabox system is that some designs call for a 300mm+ drawer face and the Metabox system is only 200mm at its highest, allowing for the possibility of screws pulling out of the face. I hate callbacks - do it right, do it once.

Craig, I am a meta box user. About twenty years worth and never have had a screw pull out of a tall front. My standard three drawer bank has two 304 tall fronts, sometimes 990 wide. I make a 608 tall trash pull out and it is also not an issue. In fact, never have had a single meta box drawer fail.

Wurth side mount soft close slides are 6.50 a pair on sale and work ok.

So the cost savings is significant.

Soft close full extensions are like my ex wife. I don’t care what you do there is going to be a problem. You have to make sure the slides are installed square and level. Your drawer boxes must be square and flat. Regular full extensions can be installed off just a bit and still work well but not the soft close ones.
Regular full extension commodity slides are fairly cheap now a days and they work as well as the Accurides. They are about 1/3 peice of under mounts. We use them on 90% of our commercial projects.

We also use melamine drawers as they are spec’d out most of the time. Most commercial jobs call out melamine boxes and drawers Every once in a while we get a wood dovetail drawer box called out and in my opinion is kind of stupid to put a wood dovetail drawer box in melamine cabinet but it is what they want and we up charge for it

When we do residential work the standard is 5/8 wood dovetail drawer box with under mounts but I do tell the home owner if they want a drawer that will not ever give them an issue use full extension side mounts no soft close. The only problem we ever have with these is when the granite countertop guys take them out and do not put them back properly. When they get the bill for replacing them it does not happen again

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
