Unique stile and rail machines
1/12/23
My shop has a unique stile and rail machines that I’m having issues with. I’ve started getting a lot of slop when I put my doors together. I checked my knives to make sure they are all the same and even changed the wheels on our stile machine to see if that would help and I’m still getting a lot of slop in my material. Any ideas for what I could try next?

Unique makes many machines that make stiles and rails. Which ones specifically? Are you using insert tooling?

What has recently changed? Did you replace tooling? Have old tooling sharpened? You have to do some inspection if it's been working fine for years and just started having trouble. Something had to change. Check that all fasteners are tight, inspect for bearing runout with a dial indicator. Do that with the drive belt taken off. Remove the tooling and inspect for cleanliness where the tooling sits on the shaft shoulder.

Have you checked run out, or that something has been knocked out of alignment with the spindle(s)

Shim your tooling to fit. That is the easiest way to get a fit that works for you.

what type of tooling are you running? If it is insert then check the alignment of the inserts in your head. Byrd tooling is very sloppy in the set up and care must be taken to make sure all inserts are on the same horizontal plane. Also check your cope and stick inserts to se if they truly match-up. Different runs can have tolorences. Also take out your inserts and clean all dust and debris from the heads before reinstalling them. If you are using resharpened tooling then make sure your tool sharpener really knows what he is doing. Many can resharpen tooling but do not have the understanding how cope and sticks must be sharpened together and after so many sharpening they are no longer any good and must be replaced. My advice is to purchase some very good insert tooling, check to see what unique recommends. Bit the bullet and pay the upfront costs and you will be good to good for years down the line without to many issues.
