Who Makes This Cutter?

I'm looking into purchasing a new Rail and Stile cutter system for the shop. We've been using the Freud insert system, but I've never liked the fit. I definitely want to keep using an insert system, but I've been seeing a few doors recently that have an additional step in the sticking profile to assist with paint from bridging from the R&S to the panel. I'll attach a pic.

See the extra little step on the groove? Anyone know who makes these cutters?

A good tool maker can make you whatever you want. I guess it depends on your volume. We use Great Lakes Tooling. We have insert tools from them that are 15 years old and still performing well.

I don't think you will find that as a stock profile.

I'm not necessarily looking for this as a stock profile. Just interested in the step in the groove. I've seen a variety of doors that have this feature and I'm just curious if there's a specific company who makes these cutters....

I have seen that done another way. Two different door companies put a slight radius on the bottom edge.

One door company also makes the tenon round. The theory there is you get more glue surface area. I'd have to believe that would make cutting the parts a little finicky.

I have posted this before; this is a great cost-effective cutter system. The nice thing is that if your needs change you can get a new backer and inserts. We use several of them.

Bob,

Why do you want a step in the profile. It looks like it would leave a small gap between the panel and the profile. Is that supposed to stop cracking or finish pooling?

Adam, That's exactly right. If the painter gets a little heavy handed with the paint or primer, it can bridge in places. This would eliminate this problem.

Like mentioned a good tool supply company can make anything you want.
If you are looking for something stock, I would check Royce ayr, they are my favourite shaper cutter manufacturer. Also check, FS tool, Dimar, Amana. In my mind Freud, CMT are a step down, but I guess your budget and the number of doors manufactured each year can play a roll in your decision.
I have been building doors for 30 years and I just buy the Royce with insert tooling. They have amazing fit and finish.

Conestoga has the small radius but their coped rail is tapered which fits into a stile that has a matching taper. When panel goes into groove that space is created. If I get doors from them and have to make something to match their doors I cut that step your after on table saw or shaper. Would be nice to have the cutter you are after. The door companies all seem to have that space. I would say it is the way to go if panel is solid wood but if you glue mdf panel in groove I think it would be better without it.

Charles GG Schmidt makes a couple different profiles with an easing on the inside edge like you’re looking for. Not that exact profile you posted though
