Giben G65 with G57 software

Hi All.

Just installed a new to us Giben G65 and am having a little trouble programming some strips.

All I want to do is cut a 4X8 sheet to 1727mm length then rotate it and cut strips of 108mm wide.

The programming examples I have start with a head cut the length of the sheet and then rip cuts. I think I want to do a head cut then a crosscut but it won't allow it.

What am I doing wrong?

Head cuts are designated as 2
Rip cuts are designated as 3
Cross cuts are designated as 4
W cuts are designated as 5
and Z cuts are designated as 6
The numbers have to follow each other when programming and you can't skip. For example if you program a head cut (2) you have to follow it with a rip cut (3) before you can do a cross cut (4). After doing a head cut (2) you may have no material to cut on the rip (3) so you enter the full value of the panel size for your rip cut value before progressing to a cross cut (4). I'm not certain this is going to accomplish exactly what you want because I'm not certain exactly what it is you want but this is the basic guideline you have to follow when programming cuts. Some of the software also had an option that allowed you to input the part sizes and quantities you want to cut. You would then press the optimize button and the software would lay the parts out on the panel for you. The software you are using hasn't been used in a while. I would have to physically lay eyes on it to go more in depth on how to use it.

Hi Rob.

OK, that makes some sense.

So if I want to make a long cut first I would do:

2 full length 1
3 full width 1
4 desired length 1

Yes, that should work.

Thanks.

Another small annoyance:

I am trying to cut a 130mm wide by 1500mm long part into 50 25mm by 130mm strips.

I have followed the sample in the programing manual exactly and I get a correct picture of how it should look,
but I get an error saying that I have an impossible pattern.

Any ideas?

How many 25mm pieces are you cutting out of the 1500mm? You may be trying to cut to many of them. You need to calculate the saw kerf for each cut you make and there is likely mandatory trim cuts that need to also be calculated. You can't exceed the 1500 mm with the sum of your measurements.

Sorry for the late response. My guess is that you're running into a gripper clearance issue with the final 25mm piece. The gripper feet are a bit longer than that and would interfere with the blade during the second-to-last cut. The machine wants to release its grip so it can move the grippers back and out of the way of that cut, but there is also the last trim cut to be performed afterward. Since it opened the grippers and pulled back for the second-to-last cut, the pusher has "lost control" of that last piece and thus will not perform the rear trim cut.

You end up losing one piece, but the solution for that series of 25mm strips is to program the final piece as something larger, such as 1.5". I don't recall the exact 'safety' dimension but it's somewhere in the 1.5" - 2.0" neighborhood.

For your original question, if you want to just go straight to cross cuts instead of doing head and rip cuts, then I believe G57 allows you to skip the 2 and 3 cut codes and your first line could start with a code 4. If it doesn't allow that, than Rob's solution would do the trick.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
