Oversized pipe in dust collection

I found a great deal on some 10” spiral pipe. I only need 8”, my dust collector has an 8” port, but 8” will be much more expensive. Will 10” work, or should I pass?

You'll have to do the calculations to make sure you can maintain 3500-4000fpm in the pipe. 4000fpm in the smaller pipes going to the machines and 3500fpm in the main trunk.
If it falls below that then the pipe is too large.

Leo is 100% correct. The dust pipe isn't a bargain if it doesn't move the air fast enough through the line. You will need to look at the size of your collector and calculate the air speed through the main and to the branches if you want the collector to work efficiently.

Thanks all for your response. Quick question: is the only reason to run larger pipe is to overcome static pressure loss and if running more cfm than can be carried by the current size? If only running one machine at a time, I could get away with smaller pipe all the way through the system?

The reason for the different sized pipes is for correct air speed vs active CFM. Too big and particles may fall out of the air stream and too small and it'll choke off the dust collector.

Leo,
Then if every machine uses a 4” port and my dust collector is 1240 cfm, would a person be better off to have two ports open so that the dust collector can move more air?

Mine is about 1400 cfm. I run a 7" main and 5" downs. I have a 5" > 4" adapter right at the port.
I've never had any issues with airspeed in my ducting. But for the most part 2 ports are open most of the time because I'm just too lazy to close off the tablesaw port.
I run with 3 open at max.

Thanks Leo, I appreciate the help. I just upgraded to a 3 hp from 1-1/2. I wanted to do it right. Just didn’t realize that the piping was going to be as expensive as the collector 😂😂.

My piping was about $200 more than my collector and I don't have a lot, and it's a very short run.

Duct sizing factors include elbows, length of run, and any flex at the machines. You have to calculate the entire system. A lot of guys collector size comments always state hp. That is a horrible descriptor of a dust collector. It really means nothing in the engineering of the system.
