Has anyone used Klearvar for step treads?
Or any other CV. I have an existing carpeted staircase to do in maple treads that will be stained.

Do not use CV for stair treads. First off CV has additives for marr resistance and add slip to the surface. Floor coatings do not, otherwise the floor will be very slippery in socks.
Also CV is to brittle. Floor coatings are much more flexible than CV.
Floor coatings are formulated completely different than Furniture or cabinet finishes for a reason.

ML Campbell’s Klearvar PDS says it is good for pre finished flooring. I was wondering if it was good for step treads.

If they are saying that in data pages then go for it and let us know how it holds up.

CV won't survive. Use a good floor finish like one of the Bona products.

MLC has a coating Magnamax H20 that would work for flooring and treads. It is an oil modified water borne urethane. Pretty tough stuff for single component.

I think i will call MLC later today and see what the say. I might just use brush on polyurethane but was hoping to spray this job.

I just talked to MLC tech support and was told that Klearvar is approved by there testing to be good for pre finished flooring and step treads. They said it was tested for durability and for slip resistance. Also they said it is only approved for in shop spaying not job site due to flammability, which i think would be obvious . I am not starting this job for another three weeks but i like to do my thinking early.

There are actually acid catalyzed CV floor finishes, so this is not that uncommon.
