Kem Aqua plus gravity feed

So I have always sprayed with a Apollo quart cup gun through a Apollo turbine. I purchased a gravity feed Apollo gun to spray some cabinetry on site. Using sw Kem Aqua plus I kept getting small junk spots as if the finish was actually drying on the top and then coming off onto the surface. I switched over to my normal gun that I have always used and have had no such issues. Seeing as I have zero experience with gravity feed guns prior to this I was hoping someone may be able to give me a little insight into what is going on here. Thanks In advance

The bottom cup gun is pressurized, the gravity feed gun is not, except for gravity, so the needle needs to be larger to get the same flow unless you thin it. I had poor flow out and a gritty feel with KA+, even with my pressure assisted HVLP gun, until I started adding about 3 - 4% of General Finishes Extender to it. After I added the Extender it sprayed great.

I am a new bee and probably doing a once in a life time project of cabinet painting. i purchased the kem aqua plus primer and semi gloss paint with high hopes of buying a gun and experimenting with spray painting but i am now chickening out and thinking of just doing a roll painting on cabinets w kem aqua plus. is that paint ok to roll with???? or is it ONLY made for spray painting?

doing this on oak. i will be sanding using liquid sander first and then apply primer. wondering if a 300 sander would be good enough post primer.

I believe kem Aqua plus is strictly to be sprayed

The grain is going to show through on oak. If that's what you want, OK, but if you were hoping for a smooth finish you will be disappointed.
KA+ is a spray only product, but many waterbornes can be brushed or rolled if you add some of General Finishes' Extender to them. The addition of 3 - 6% by volume will extend the open time and allow the finish to flow out before it sets. This won't work with all waterbornes but it does for many. That said, you might be better served by switching to paint. SW's Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel goes on great with a brush or roller. Same with BM's Advance.

I did a project with oak doors and drawer fronts. These were veneer slab doors and drawer fronts. I did not like the KA surfacer sprayed on it, came out pitted and blotchy.
I thinned it 5% with water and put it on with roller, I think 2 coats. Sprayed 1 coat KA plus white for finish coat. Grain shows through but that’s exactly what customer wanted. They came out really nice, I used the 6” foam rollers. I only use the KA plus with a pressure pot.

Thank you so much for the input. So I am returning the Kem Aqua plus cause I have still not managed to garner the courage & time to use spray gun.

So looking for options that are BEST for cabinet painting with rollers.
How is SW Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel? If i am sanding all surfaces well do i need to use a primer with that? If yes, which one?

Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel goes on great with a brush or foam roller. You can use a primer, or not, but I wouldn't it you want the grain to show. You may want to thin it 5 - 10%. Practice on scrap until you are confident.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
