Anyone using Mirka Deros instead of air sanders?

1/25/22
Matt

Currently we're using a mixture of Dynabrade and Mirka 5" air sanders and are quite happy with them, however we also need some more sanders to accommodate increased production.... and don't really want to put any more load on our air compressor.

Are the 110v Deros sanders a truly good production tool? In other words, does your team genuinely like using them, get good results, and do these things stand up to 8 hours of use daily the way a Dynabrade does?

We have downdraft tables, should we consider also getting the Deros with dust collection? Does the dust collection interfere with the functionality?

Kinda been covered extensively all around. On mass everything Ive read people are very happy with the Deros especially due to cost of operation.

I have 2 older Ceros in the shop that have been flawless (we were lucky and didnt have any of the transformer issues that many others had). When I wanted to add more I didnt want to leave the dynabrade envelope (Deros with transformer built on the back of the sander) so we went with Air Vantage for 2 more 6" sanders. Equally as impressive as at the time at least they offered the separate transformer form factor that keeps the sander pretty much identical to a dynabrade. To my knowledge Air Vantage and Surf Prep were the only manufacturers still offering the separate transformer style. Other bonus was at the time the 6" Air Vantage was only 319.00 which was a phenomenal deal. The dust pickup on the Air Vantage is great. Not as many selectable speed ranges but we just run the paddle trigger variable wide open so its just like a dynabrade (full speed control through the entire range with the paddle).

The only gripe I had with the Air Vantage is it has a safety time out feature on the paddle where if the sander sits for 5 minutes it times out so you dont in advertently hit the paddle or flip the sander over. So after the five minutes the indicator light on the back will be flashing and you just have to hit the speed up button and its back on. Irritated me initially but zero issue now.

Id imagine when you start implementing the DC sanders as your dynabrades age out you wont replace them. The cost of generating all that air and the noise is something I will never miss.

I'm still running my Ceros and currently added a Deos for the finish room. Both are great sanders. Aggressive and fine enough to go straight to finish for stain.

I find the slightly larger and bulkier size of the Deros less attractive than the Ceros. But the performance is just the same. A bit less maneuverable because of the slightly larger size.

Well worth not having to be attached to a compressor.

2 ceros running for 8 years flat out. 1 new deros running for 1 year flat out 6 days a week. Currently all 3 running all day. Changed a couple of bearings. Our 4 dynabrade sit on a shelf.

Gentlemen this has been helpful information, and I'll look into the Air Vantage sanders, I was unfamiliar with them. Thank you!

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
