simple and quick way to get a very straight cut on a live edge board
2/6/20
I am cutting blanks for arrowshaft production. All wood is just under 5/8" thick (15mm). I must follow the grain very closely, and thus the dilemma. It is so slow to do this. All wood is planed once to see the growth rings well. Straight edge and a pencil line on each end helps give a reference. I made a jig which clamps the wood and I run this along my fence on a table saw. I measure the distance to the fence and match it on each end of the board (36" long). The result is perfectly straight cuts right on the grain. (But is too slow for production!) Anyone have an idea of perhaps using a laser to match this and another jig to hold it? Boards are 5-9 " wide only.

You can make yourself a plywood sled that has a runner in the mitre slot of your tablesaw. Integrate a Destaco clamp at the front and the back to hold your board. I would put a wood fence at each end to indicate the cut line (oncethe sled is run through the saw). I hope this makes sense.

You can also get a sliding table saw with a pressure beam and a laser.

Track saw. Festool, Makita and DeWalt all make them. More companies do too.

I am using destaco clamps now, but to match the line with grain rings is what slows it all down. Not sure how the track saw could help though. I need a laser above me, so I immediately see where the blade will cut. Perhaps mounting a laser above and in front of the saw will do all I need. Any further advice, anyone?

I assume your boards are fairly consistent in thickness. Try adding a plexiglass straight edge to the sled that you slide the blank under. The edge of the plexiglass will be on the cut line.

Tom, that sounds like a great idea! I'll have to give it a try! Thanks! Certainly it is all consistent thickness.
