Gene, and others,
I will not be able to attend the Webinar due to work, but have the following questions.
I dry oak from my land that I mill by chainsaw. I let it air dry in my garage for a few years. Some has worm holes and have read the posts on PPBs. my recent batch is from a dead tree i cut down and processed, cut all sap wood off and removed pith wood - mostly. it had active worms/beetles.
I want to kill any insects in the wood prior to leaving it for years to dry/acclimate in garage shop.
Consider no place to kiln dry it. Solar is not the best option due to space issues.
800 bd ft. is stickered every 12 inches with 3/4 sticks.
Can I put a case of plastic or 1 " insulation box around it and put a heater at one end of the tunnel to blow hot air down the stack (stickers obviously perpendicular) with 6 " spacing on the tunnel for air flow. my goal would be to get it to 130 degrees for 3 plus hours to kill the pests?
Since the wood is green, will this heat in tunnel crack the oak?
I'm in northern VA, 90 degrees ambient, 60 to 90 RH current climate. MC is well above 30% as my Wagner RF moisture meter is pegged above top scale, which is 30. I assume lots of free water in oak. It is sitting in garage for only two weeks so.
Alternate question: what Oak MC is safe to go into Kiln (if I can find a good shop) and what MC is safe to go into Solar kiln?
Can it be fresh green oak?
wish I could watch the webinar later.
Thanks in advance,
George
