Ok I will say I know absolutely nothing about these saws, my question is how much cutting would you need to do to justify one? How many 3 inch strips can you get in one pass on your average machine:
We used to make miles of 1/4 inch solid birch edge banding before the 3 mm pvc became the edging of choice, for that we used stacked cutter blades on a shaper.
Only reason I am asking as I saw a guy had a used one so was wondering? 😀

A gang rip is the only was I have seen send a piece of kickback completely through a man; in one side and out the other. They are a main kick back offender. That being said with safety engineering and care they are amazing. The laser and computer aided ones that run in molding and trip mills are amazing. It can easily replace 20 of me, and I pay the bills behind a table saw.

The manufacturing reps are the ones who have give you ROI for different setups.

You need to look at how much material you need to cut and see if it justifies the buying and setting up a saw like this. I make molding blanks on mine, an old pinheiro AMA, 30 HP main motor. We typically can rip 2000 lf per hour of single piece. So if you're ripping multiple pcs, multiply that by how many pcs per rip. I have ripped as many as 8 pcs per pass when I had to make a ton of narrow pcs. That was aspen though so fairly soft. 5 or 6 was the most I've done in hardwoods. Kickback hazard, yes you can get them, saw maintenance is critical and you won't get them. Meaning the anti kickback fingers MUST be in working order, if they aren't, you stop and fix them RIGHT NOW. My saw is not one of the computer shifting blade saws, I wish it was, but it's paid for and works everyday.

We had to feed a Weinig running at about 30-35 l/f per minute. That took two men on a single blade Deihl ripsaw all day, every day to feed the molder. 80 m/hrs.

We took out the Diehl and put in a dip chain gang rip with lasers, etc. Mereen Johnson. Expensive, Cool. And fast. Those two guys ripped everything for the molder for a week in one day, maybe a day and a half at the most. 16 m/hrs, up to 24 m/hrs

A savings of 5 to 1. The ripsaw paid for itself in the first 9 months of operation. We added another molder, and the rip saw kept up with it, no problem.

I honestly don’t see the need for a gang rip saw unless you are a high production shop that buys your lumber by the board foot. They are very expensive and would take a long time for a 3 or 4 man shop to pay you back on your ROI versus buying your lumber s4s. I can see justifying a straight line rip if you buy your lumber rough cut but a gang rip not so much.

Tipper - I think most shops that do much of anything would buy their lumber by the Board Foot. It is how professional woodworkers deal with their base materials.

I gave a very good, precise example of ROI from an experience back in the 80's that shows what does happen when a gang rip replaces a single blade rip.

During that time, I tracked all moldings, jambs, casings, etc. and had labor components to 4 decimal places for each l/f of material made. Also had to 4 decimal places the amount of lumber per l/f.

Tipper, I have a small shop, basically myself and my wife part time. I have a gang rip that I use every day, feeding a molder. Worth every penny if you run enough material, like David Sochar said above, the right saw can improve how much thru put you can achieve without extra manpower.
