Description
Dowbuilt, a Seattle, WA based general contractor, is hiring a Millwork Engineer to create shop drawings used in fabrication of bespoke casework, furniture, and millwork in our shop. The drawing and modeling phase is where a lot of the legwork toward understanding a project happens and begins the development of an overall build strategy and workflow. In addition, a Millwork Engineer communicates and collaborates closely with general construction and shop fabrication teams to confirm design intent. Project management assistance and field visits are required in this role.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Engineering Responsibilities (70-90% of time):
Create 2D shop drawings with AutoCAD and revise as necessary to meet designer intent.
Review architectural drawings and technical specifications
Incorporate manufacturer specifications for appliances, fixtures, hardware, etc. into drawings
Incorporate material characteristics and performance criteria into drawings
Propose technical solutions coordinating design intent, material limitations, and manufacturer specifications.
Communicate and collaborate closely with project construction teams to present technical detail and confirm design intent.
Coordinate constructability review with Engineering Manager and / or Shop Manager
Document key ordering and technical criteria for approval prior to production
Prepare CAD drawings for use by the CNC Operator within AutoCAD
Develop cabinetry layout drawings, prep CAD drawings for CNC programming, parts lists, etc.
Introduce shop crew to approved drawings and act as resource to answer questions during fabrication
Manage time effectively and prioritize tasks across multiple projects
Project Management Assistance (between 5-20% of time):
Update and maintain submittal logs, including mockups, material samples, finish samples, etc.
Create RFIs and RFI log in collaboration with Modeler/Drafter and Production Manager
Work with Designers/Architects and vendors to coordinate fidelity samples and continue subcontractor coordination.
Develop consistent project closeout process and package, and assist with project closeout
Assist in ensuring graphical quality and continuity in all of Shop documents
Take responsibility as project lead as required including project task management, collaboration with engineering team members and team leaders, and mentorship of other engineers / drafters / modelers.
Field Measurements/Documentation (approximately 5-10% of time):
Participate in field verification of critical millwork dimensions
Document field dimensions for translation by engineering team
Document as-built conditions that may inform build strategy through sketches and photographs
TRAVEL: Some local and national travel may be required for this position (less than 10%).
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED
To be successful as a millwork engineer in our shop, you’ll need:
2-5 years’ cabinet shop experience or similar drafting experience preferred.
5 years AutoCAD experience preferred. Ongoing training will be provided for otherwise well qualified candidates
Strong illustration skills using AutoCAD. Knowledge of Alphacam preferred.
Familiarity with specialty hardware/product and ability to do research and coordinate orders
Cabinet shop experience/education is highly preferred, with basic understanding of tools and machinery and familiarity with a variety of woods
Attention to detail: knowledge of cabinetry fabrication
Passion for innovation: research and implementation of new build strategies toward efficient and quality production; value engineering skills.
Can work autonomously and as a team player
Ability to meet schedule/deadlines
Flexible thinking and active listening
Patience with all team members internal / external: this role involves translating and clarifying design intent while applying shop constraints.
Demonstrate and support a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion
Valid driver’s license and transportation to get to work safely and on-time. Occasional driving of a company vehicle may be required.
Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with a wide variety of people
Ability to read architectural drawings

The compensation range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00 per hour
