This is my new furniture system for that I have designed (prototypes) in my shop over the last 16 months, we hope to get it manufactured on a large scale in the near future. It is a free standing convertible unit,uses any style of stansdard size mattress and has a completely manual movement that I designed and patented. The 1st prototype is made of white pine and birch panels, and the 2nd is steel tubing with water base finished birch ply panel inserts. My goal is to make a "KIT" (consisting of an innerframework, mechanical components and assembly materials)available to other carpenters, cabinetshops etc. to be combined with their outer panels to make a wide variety of styles, similar to the kits that wallbeds companies offer. I like the couch version, looks very cool. I wouldn't want to sit under it though unless there is some really safe bar/bolt that I know will never come out accidentally, I bet it would hurt quite a bit if it the bed fell on your head. Otherwise looks very cool.

About the concern of the bed falling; the mechanical components are rated at 8x the weight load limit, and more than 25 times the ultimate strenght (and thats for the weakest link). The beds movement is balanced, so the bed naturally stays up without bars or bolts and the only latch is there to keep the bed down to assist with mattress and bedding changes, thus avoiding unwanted upward movement when you lift the mattress. There is no latching in its raised position, this is done to prevent people from using it as a storage platform and creating real fall hazards. It is probably the safest convertible bed (to be soon) on the market, especially as there is absolutely no exposed moving parts.

The bed system will be made in Tucson, AZ - USA. I am trying to find as many US components to use in it as well, which currently is around 85% US made parts. Thanks for your comment Josh, I saw your work on your web site; it is wonderful that you are giving that beautiful lumber a new life with some great looking finished results, the Kit I will offer in the near furture will work good and easily with any outer cladding as well.

there is not a lot of things I see on here that impress me other the quality of craftsmanship involved in some of the furniture or cabinets but this is very ingenius and impressive.. In fact i kinda wish i had thought of it .. LOL .. best of luck with it my friend.. the design looks like it would hold a good market in europe.. Once you start moving a few I would look itno a low budget design that can be bulk made for college dorms... endless market possabilities.. congratulations.

Thanks for your comment Jim, I appreciate the support!. There are a couple of these styles of beds that have debuted in Europe over the last few months, although they have to be substantially mounted to the wall and ceiling, or built in to the structure. I have designed a base model that I am gearing towards college, firehouse and military dormitories.

Looks very nice, only thing I would change would be to make a removable, or flip out of the panel to cover the mattress when it is in the raised position. It would look much more finished, and cleaner IMHO. But I do really like the concept.

Awesome design...I was actually designing something similar but over the top of a dining booth with table that doubles as a coffee table. My motivation comes from wanting low cost 1 room housing for africans. Many families here can only afford to rent 1 room at less than $20 per month. I'd love to see a low cost solution for them to have some comfort.
