Looks a lot like the heavily laquered 'furniture' I saw in Thailand and Cambodia. They were usually protected from the elements, kept from use (museum style pieces), and almost exclusively found in Buddhist temples or other religious sanctuary.
Very nice job on this piece.

Water cured redwood and Redwood burl are hand selected from California suppliers who have access and harvest frist grwoth logs and stumps that are reclaimed and recycled from the ocean and specified Redwood Forest. The stumps, from trees cut over 100 years ago in Northern California are submersed in watery bogs or rivers. Mineral in the water have basically pickled the wood, resulting in highlighted tree rings, burls, grain patterns, and birdseyes. Highlights range from mauve to blue to maroon. The wood has sand and silicate imbedded in the grain making the sanding and finishing labor intensive. I have extensive inventory available for projects fom myself and others.
