Tapered Cambered Edge-Mitered PVC Columns

These are some decorative pvc columns that conceal structural posts on an inset porch. They are 10" square at the base up to handrail height, then taper down to 7 1/2" at the cap. The taper is gently curved outward by 5/16", and we were asked to miter the corners for a seamless look.

Very nice look. How did you compute the angles for the miters? Is it all 45 degree? This looks like a great job for a CNC. What kind of glue did you use? Did you use fasteners too? This is a great design... nice work. -Chris

We pattern routed it with a full size bottom bearing 45deg chamfer bit. We used biscuits as an alignment device and azek cement to form a permanent bond. No mechanical fasteners on the column sides. The architect kenney nickerson designs provided cad drawings that specified the exact specs.

Where did you get the material? What is it specifically? Did you biscuit on the 45 degree joint? How did the joint end up? Tight tight? or did it need any fill? Can the columns be painted? Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the kind words. Chris, it's just 1x12 azek pvc stock. We used a porter cable biscuit machine set at 135deg to biscuit the 45deg edge. We increased pressure on the clamps to get squeeze on the azek cement, which, after sanding, ended up with a tight tight joint as you say.

Genuinely nice work. They look great.

HOWEVER... Call me a purist, but why is this in WOODweb? It belongs in a residential construction forum or in a plastics industry forum.

Nice job.

You guys must have been hustling to get the columns glued up because the Azex glue comes off fast.
