Mirka Ceros vs Surfprep RO (DA) Sanders?

5/11/17

We need to add another sander but are already running 2 Dynabrades. So instead of buying a new compressor, we are looking at the electrics. I know people love their Ceros' (when they're not broken) and they look a little more ergonomic and maneuverable than the new Deros version.
Has anyone tried the Surprep 5" (or 6") Surge Random Orbit (DA) sanders? Especially anyone who has also tried a Ceros. We have their 3"x4" pneumatic sander it's great.
I know the Festool groupies will chime in, but I put Festool in the same camp as Apple. Some of their stuff is truly the best. Others, well there are better offerings out there for less cost.

We love our Ceros sanders. Never had the first bit of trouble out of them. But Im not sure Im personally too keen on the Deros but Ive never had one in my hand. The price jump is a bit to bear too as the Ceros was already ridiculously expensive.

We looked at SurfPrep before they had an electric with dust collection. I wouldnt hesitate to buy one but havent looked at them lately. Will be interesting to hear what others think.

I scan Ebay for used Ceros' but they dont come around to often.

Someone correct me if im wrong but Mirka discontinued the Ceros and all thats available is the Deros now. They had problems. I went thru 3 Mirka Ceros before i got one that actually did not have any problems. So...lol, they got the bugs worked out then quit making them.

I would not hesitate to try Surf Prep

We have 2 ceros and run the heck out o them. On one the controller fried but I think it was a dust issue. we had it fixed under warranty. WE have changed the bearings once in 5 years. I used my dynabrade air sander the other day and after 5 minutes put it down and went and got the ceros. I havent usd a deros but I would say that they are worth it. I dont know about the surfprep ones.

Never tried the Surface Prep. I do have a Dynabrade but it doesn't get used. I have had the Ceros for about five years. It has stopped working three times, one time there were even flames coming out the side of it. That being said Mirka's customer service is great, they fixed it for free every time. I bought the brushless Festool as a backup. It's hard to control and vibrates so much your wrist/arm will get fatigued quickly. You also have to press a button to turn it on and off (as opposed to the paddle) and it doesn't even work that well (that reminds me, I need to put it on craigslist or in the recycle bin). I recently bought the Deros for the backup. It works excellent, just like the Ceros. (now my repaired Ceros is the backup) After you get accustomed to the Mirka sanders there's no going back. I would buy the Deros without hesitation.

I work for SurfPrep so I am biased....

I absoluely love our new 5" Ray sander with the on board power supply. The power supply is in the very light weigh extended tail. It's super comfortable and very powerfull. I'm going to replace the air sander in my travel tool kit with the Ray soon.

In both our 5" and our 3x4 sanders, our motors are different than the competition. They are supposed to be higher torque for lower amps. It's called an Outer Runner design. I cannot expound on the differences but our tools are very powerful for very low amp draw.

I think the industry will move toward electric over the next decade. The savings in electricty is pretty huge over a standard air sander.

Adam, We are super interested in the Ray. They are available with dust collection correct? That was one of the things that has always put me off with SurfPrep that dust collection seemed to be secondary?

Yes. Easy to set up for dust collection. When you see our vacuum unit you will be blown away. It's very comfortable to use with the vacuum also.

We're very interested too. Where are any details on this vacuum system you mention? It's not on your website and my distributor knows nothing about it.

I don't believe our vacuum is on the website right now. The girl who does it just got married Sunday!

The vacuum was originally designed for Military and Aero Space applications. The designer of the vacuums approached us about a collaboration on a vacuum for the wood working industry and we jumped at the chance.

The vacuum has a bypass motor so it cannot be damaged or over heated by being plugged up.

It has a true hepa filter.

It has automatic activation by air and electric on every vacuum. You can have one of each plugged in if you wanted and then will both work when needed.

It has great casters and rolls super easily.

It's very quiet compared to most vacuum systems I've been around.

These are not plastic toys. The barrel is very thick plastic and the head unit is made of steel. This is the kind of vacuum that last a very long time.

I'm sorry I don't have pictures, but you can message me and I can get you in contact with those who do have pictures and specs.

Adam,
I seem to have read much of this before and understand SurfPrep is a small company. Just odd that so much stuff is not on the site or product literature/info available for download.

I think one of our suppliers is a SurfPrep dealer. I will give them a ring and see what they have available to run to the shop for demo.

Just bought the Deros and 912 Vac system. I can barely hear the vac, even with the Deros dialed down to half speed. After the first few days of use, it was a wake up call to what's available. The net papers and pad savers they designed for this are eye openers. A UK reviewer called it. They cost twice as much and last three/four times longer.
The bad news? Using any other sander in the shop from now on. There's a DA in the back on a huge compressor. I'll let those guys have my dust mask and headphones.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
