Dovetail tool for CNC machines?4/30
I am thinking about obtaining a dovetail cabinet apparatus for our shops CNC. I am worried that the item will take too long to the factory, and still not be tantamount to an obtained dovetail drawer from a provider.
Have you attempted this previously? Thoughts?
Don't even start to think you can make a dovetailed drawer box on a flat table router as fast or for less money then you can buy one.
You can only make plywood drawer boxes on your router and for the cost of a baltic birch box from a drawer box producer, you're running your router for pennies.
The only justification for doing them is if you have no other options.
While I wouldn't make a career out of making dovetails on a cnc, we do them for about half of what the drawer box supplier charges. Since our router isn't busy 8 hours a day cutting cabinet parts, we can easily cut parts in the downtime. Actually, the money we saved by not buying our drawers has more than made the machine payment every month.
With both Top Drawer and the Drawer Connection in your town, are you sure you can run those for less than they can sell them to you?
I do agree that if you have open time on the machine and you want to keep it running, that's one thing, but I also wonder if there aren't more valuable things your operator could be doing.
I'm absolutely sure that I can do them cheaper. I've used both suppliers for the past 15 years for solid maple when the need arises but for the past 12 months we've made our own Baltic Birch drawers, saved money and we don't have to wait the week or so lead time needed for an order to be delivered. Now, given the employees I have and their workload, if I had to produce 200 drawers a week then yes, it would make sense to outsource but since we have some machine downtime and downtime for the one guy that puts them together....it makes sense.
Make sure you comparing apples and oranges.
There is a big difference between making drawers for internal use on spare machine time and making drawers for sale to others.
