Some time ago someone asked for info about ID of bird's eye maple trees. Here it is

Thanks for the link Gene. I posted some pictures on another site asking about some speckles in walnut. They all have want looks like bark in the eyes. I've also cut maple that seems similar to Masur Birch that also have bark in the eyes. The maple I have cut has a similar look to what this article shows, with radial indentations, but with little hooks or line of bark in them. Is that still considered birds-eye? I also have some ash veneer that has these little bark inclusions that are the size and shape of birds-eye. Just curious what to call my treasures.

Bird's eye does not have bark, but is a swirl in the grain. What you have are called bark inclusions. However, if you wined to invent a name and use that for marketing, go for it. How about wild turkey burls?

Good to see that info Gene, thanks. Although I never see it in my area, where Silver Maple is the most abundant. The most common abnormal grain in it, is small cluster burls, and sometimes fiddleback, or tiger-stripe along with it, which is a side to side deviation, rather than in and out rippling, and shows best in QS or rift.
Rich, that is some great looking walnut, do you still have it, is it for sale?
I think freckled, or maybe bird-shot,,,,,, No wait, Dick Chaney walnut ought to describe it.

Wish I had a gunny sack full of nuts from that one. I would be trying to get them to sprout, not that it would do me any good at my age. But wouldn't it a nice project for a grandkid to care for on a wood-lot, hoping for veneer logs in his or her later years.

I'd really like a slice of what ever you decide to name that bird's eye plank. But what I'd like even more is where to source curly or bird's eye, 4 to 6 inches thick and I'd love to have the Dick Chaney figured wood! I need material to make half a dozen print parts 6" X 4" X 26" and 36", dovetail breadboard cleats and Moxon chops for a 5" thick walnut Roubo bench. I will take charity but am willing to pay (and pay and pay). LOL
