Depends on what the finish is. If it's conversion varnish you can use just about any normal cleaning chemical that doesn't have some sort of abrasive in it.

TSP is the best cleaner for old gummy oils residue. Takes it right off. Wet the area well. wait a minute or two and wipe clean with a seperate rag. It didn't harm my laq cabs or anything else I have used it on.

After 30 years it finally dawned on me that cooking oils are just another oil. Mineral spirits removes oil.....and it removes cooking oils easily and completely. I was really impressed with how easily it removed the accumulated gunk on our vent hood.
You can remove nearly any combination of oil and dirt by first wiping with mineral spirits and then Murphy's Oil Soap in water.

Hello to everyone that has responded to my message and I'm happy to inform you that a 2 stage cleaning of mineral spirits and oil soap did the job . Thanks for the advice .
Best regards Peter
