Description
Newman-Whitney S-480 planer -
in very good operational condition.
This is an excellent, compact,
Single-sided, top head, industrial planer.
Newman Machine Company is alive and well in Greensboro, NC and supports this machine with parts, tooling and service.
Has a 30 HP, 240/480 VT, 3 PH motor.
It is direct-coupled to the cutterhead.
It has a 5 HP motor for the feedworks.
Feeds fast and planes accurately.
Has high-yeild chipbreakers, so is considered a "roughing" planer, but it planes very smoothly and is a good machine for rough breakdown as well as finisihing work.
Planes up to 26" in width,
Opens up to 8" in thickness.
Table raising is by a handwheel on the lower left side, below the start/stop buttons for the cutterhead and feed.
Has the Newman "Quiet-Cut" Helical Carbide cutterhead.
The carbide bits have good life in them.
The Newman Head is the best carbide cutterhead design for industrial planers - The helical design planes the wood at an angle - a "shear" cut, which ensures that there is minimal to no tearout of the wood, unlike steel "straight-knife" heads, which tend to tear out in knotty and irregularly grained lumber.
The helical design is very quiet, unlike steel straight knife planers, which howl and scream, especially when dull.
This machine comes with a grinder to sharpen the bits in the head, on the planer. Because it has a carbide head, you do not need to sharpen very often, either.
This is an excellent, compact planer.
It is in very good condition.
Planer weighs about 6,500 Lbs.
Planer has about a 5' x 6' footprint.
This is the last large planer I have for sale.
It was well maintained by my company.
It is not a junker that needs to be rebuilt.
