James, that's a very nice concept and execution. Is it red or white oak? It looks like red from the picture, but it's hard to tell.
As for pricing, how long did it take you to make and how much were the materials? Also, are you pricing it with or without the aquarium?
Peter, thank you. It is made of Red Oak solid and ply. The cabinet and canopy together took me about 20 hours and cost me about $500 for the materials. I am pricing this piece without the aquarium. Thanks for your help.
I forgot to mention that this piece is finished in Minwax Golden Oak finish with 3 coats of System 3 Marine Varnish since it was being used on a reef tank with exposure to salt.
Great idea James, nice job!
James, pricing is always a very subjective subject, but I'll take a swag at it. 20 hours at $50/hr plus $500 in materials is $1500, so I would charge somewhere between that and $2500, depending on intangibles.
Peter thanks for you comment. I came up with the same figures, but I was wondering if anyone would pay that much for an aquarium cabinet? I am figuring if it is custom someone should be willing to pay the price. Thanks for your help!
I believe people will pay more than that.Im building a similar cabinet for an aqaurium. Its 6' bow front aqaurium with lid and 2-2' side units finished on both sides to divide a room.I seen the estimate from another company of 15000$ for just the cabinet.
Where would you recommend advertising a piece like this? I listed it on Livedeal.com, but no one seems to be interested. I am pretty new to the world of selling my work. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.
Try searching for "aquarium" and "forum". Most have "for sale" threads. There are a lot of people investin $$$ in their pets.
Hello, I was admiring your work and am interested to know if you have "plans" or "diagrams" available for this canopy. I am an active duty US Marine stationed in Japan and am in need of a canopy. I LOVE your design and would like to build something for my large reef tank. I have access to a wood shop at work and think that if I had detailed plans that I could adapt to my tank size Icould build something similar. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
