Another project I have completed in the last year. This was just a plain Sheetrock wall. I built and installed the bookcases. Then did the mantle, and toy box. I also did wainscoting around the room. Again any comments would be appreciated.

I did the same type of thing around my fireplace with previously sheet rocked walls - seems to have always been missing something but now it seems to always have belonged there. Fantastic job - particularly on the mantel and the arched bookshelves.
As I have looked at this room is does surprise me that it was built by one who calls him self "a hobbyist" although I too believe that great craftsmen formed to his craft comes from one who not only may do his work for a living but also takes it home with him and perfects it by also being a "hobbyist" in what he loves to do. As I said before, keep doing what your doing! This work is fantastic.
On the bottom photo of the wainscoting is that, could it be, a hidden receptical outlet I see to the right of the air vent on that vertical? By the way how much time do you have invested into this project?
I really just do this as a hobby. My wife rolls her eyes every time I buy a new tool. I am very close to having a shop like Norm Abram now. (my hero) No Timesaver sander though. I can not justify the cost yet..... You are right on the wainscoting. I designed the layout so the receptacle would fall on that part and be centered. I bought Oak wood outlet covers and finished them to match. Then I used a brown magic marker to "color" the receptacle so it did not stand out. Time? I did not keep track, but if I was trying to do this for a living I would starve to death.
Excellent job. I like the mantel. One thought....would it be possible to add a false panel to the bottom of the shelf on the left to cover the harth and copy the one on the right? It may balance out the wall. Just a thought. How did you attach the mantel to the brick?
