This was a commission for a client in Chicago. I was going for a kind of deco look. There’s a slight bowfront to the birdseye drawer fronts. The bottom drawer set is actually one drawer with a slot down the middle so it looks like the others. The handles are wenge. The carcase and top are all solid sapele.
At the time, I was making my own veneers- a very labor intensive job. Doing it yourself, you can make the veneers a little thicker so there’s less problem with sanding through, but overall, it’s a lot of work. I think it’s better to use commercial veneers and a press. The choices are infinitely greater. See more at alancarterstudio.com.
