That's more like it designwise.
But the spacing to combustables from firebox opening part of the building code in my area is 6" laterally and 11 3/4" vertically.
What you've built is far to close, and will catch fire the first time you get a good fire going.
Mulligan's comment is the very first thing I thought of when I saw this.
Codes for woodburning vs. gas log fireplaces may be different, and if you're going to build these you need to know the safety rules. This one is pretty, for sure, but also dangerous.
Ryan, Cool mantle but like the others have mentioned saftey first. San Jose, Ca. code is as follows, 6"min.to combustable for a gas insert and 12"min to combustable for wood burning. Now if these people are anything like me and they have a raging fire the possibilities are there for this piece to catch fire. Chances are nothing will happen but a learning eperience for the next one. Good luck Ryan!
I tried to post the final picture but wasn't able to.
There is new tile that has been put around the hideous white tile. The Mantle protrudes only an inch from the tile. And this is a non working fireplace. Safety is my utmost concern. Thank you for your concern.
