Company Name: Thomas Hirsz WoodworkOriginally built by my client's grandfather 60 years ago. His Golden Retriever had a bad case of separation anxiety while he was on holidays and chewed up the top. I was given free reign to build a new top. Original was mahogany crotch veneer, but I used Pomelle Sapele for the new top. This was a real plum of a job and I intend to focus on more fine veneer work in the future. His home insurance paid for it.

Tom,
Very nice looking work with the sapele veneer. I have a bid pending with a client who wants a 6' dia. sunburst top of crotch mahog. made for an existing contemp. base. They're not sure on the number of segments yet. Which kind of glue did you use and did you have any trouble with pull through in the vac press? I'll keep you posted. JV

Jeffrey, I use a polyurethane mastic adhesive known as PL Premium. It is in caulking tubes and sold as a premium construction adhesive. I comb it out over the substrate using an old dovetail saw blade,as a tiler would do. Some glue does come through the veneer but it sands/scrapes down nicely and what is left in the pores stains and finishes like wood becoming impossible to see. This adhesive is totally waterproof. It does not foam up like liquid polyurethane glue does. Try some samples for yourself to get the right glue thickness.
