Cherry Entertainment Center... Hidden Surprises!

Listing #2187 Listed on: 07/08/2009 Company Name: Hostetler Custom Cabinetry
Name: Chris Hostetler

This cherry entertainment center is 9 1/2 feet tall and it houses a 60" plasma tv. The center doors are 1" thick and trifold and pocket into the right column. The hinging was an engineering work of art by Dale Hostetler. The center door is a custom carving by Charleston artisan Mary May. We wrapped four columns in the room with a complementary design and matching finish. This unit sits caddy corner in the room and has a hidden access door. Great work Kurt, Raul, Ric, and Terry! Enjoy!

I can't say I'm mad about the finish. To me it looks like a sealer coat in desperate need of a top coat. But... having said that; the craftsmanship (as with the other pieces you have posted) is f
antastic! Keep up the good work and keep sharing it with us. Thanks

Looks great. The pocket door system is pretty cool. I like how it hides behind the column. Nice work

The finish is a dull sheen which is what most of our homeowners are favoring these days.

Very well done.

Very nice piece Chris.
I like the dull finish. It gives the piece the look of oil rubbed in instead of plastic sprayed on.
I would have liked to see the grille on the top made more narrow so that the columns could go all the way up to support the shell pediment. This would also, in my opinion, given better proportions to your columns by extending the fluted section making them less "squatty". I would also like to see some half spindles or a pierced molding over the grill to disguise it.(I know it is difficult to provide for sound equipment and cooling and still maintain the integrity of a piece of furniture) My biggest complaint is the Palm Tree carving on the door. I think it is totally out of character with the spectacular shell carving on the pediment. For my taste the plain circle top panel would have looked much better.
All in all I it is a beautiful piece well executed. Much nicer than anything I have ever turned out.

i have done my share of charleston work and the flat sheen (i will not call it dull) is truly popular, after all charleston has its own color "charleston green" which is hand rubbed down to acient spec's

excellent work!!

actually i would venture to say there is a surround sound "bar" in the top

Jim, you are correct, there are 3 Paradigm surround sound speakers behind the speaker panel. There is about 3/4" clearance OVERALL split between the three speakers... so that was the biggest design challenge besides the tri-fold pocket doors. We got this job from an AV company, so building the piece to fit the sound requirements was the main goal. The palm tree carving/ carved shell/ woven marsh grass in the door upper panels all played on each other for a lowcountry/ marsh feel. Thanks for your insight jim ;) Jim, you are in columbia correct? dont you use v-carve pro? I think i remember your name from some forums...

That is a very nice piece – I have a few questions: What hardware did you use for the doors and what did you do with the dead space in the corner? Again - that is a very nice piece…

We used accuride Heavy duty pocket door hardware (about 7 slides for the door) and ferrari hinges (again about 7 for the door). We couldnt find any super heavy duty slides so we just grouped the slides and hinges to carry the load. The Ferrari hinges are great because they clip on front to back or back to front or straight on which is helpful when there are 7 hinges in a 40" section. The dead space has a hidden access door that allows access to the AV equipment. We also put some shelving back there for some extra storage.

Bernie, I would love to see a picture of that if you have one. I know they were excited to have that done but I never saw it go in.
