This is the front view of my cherry tool box. All dovetails were hand cut, using a dovetail saw, mallet and chisels. The lid, when closed, depresses an aluminum plunger which locks the front panel in place, A small mortise lock secures the lid.
The drop down front panel conceals drawers when it is closed. Two dowels slide along 1/4" grooves in the bottom, allowing the panel to slide back inside the bottom of the box.
The drop-down saw holder is held in pace by a wooden latch. The latch travels along grooves and is spring-loaded to secure the drop-down saw holder.
The bottom of the saw holder is kerfed to keep blades separated. The latch block doubles as a holder for smaller saws.
Hand holds are carved into each side. An additional block of cherry was added inside the case so that the hand holds could be deep enough.
Drawers are made to hold specific tools. The sides and back are made of 1/2" cherry. Most of the drawer fronts are 5/8" thick, some are 3/4" thick. The drawers have 1/4" x1/4" dadoes in the sides that act as drawer slides. Drawer bottoms are 1/4" birch plywood.
The spoke shave drawer is 13-1/4" wide, 2" tall and 8-5/8" deep.
The small carving tools drawer is 13-1/4" x 1-3/16" x 8-5/8".
The larger drawers are 30-1/2 " wide, 8-5/8" deep. One is 1-3/4" tall, the other is 2-1/4" tall.
The block plane drawer is 3" wide x 5" tall x 8-5/8" deep.
Slots are cut in the back of the upper case bottom, to allow a framing square to slide behind the drawers.
This is all you see of the framing square when it is stored.
With all the drawers removed, you can see the drawer frame work with 1/4" rails and how the framing square fits inside the back.
