Architectural Detailing for a Foyer

Listing #3226 Listed on: 04/02/2011 Company Name: Hudson Cabinetmaking, Inc.
Name: Russell Hudson Member

A few years back, an interior designer who brings us work from time to time, asked us to further 'decorate' her client's foyer. When we left the job, it wasn't painted so I hadn't really seen the end result. (I recently sent my son back there to grab a few shots for us ...and for a post).
Central to this foyer were a pair of 'mirrored' staircases. Though good looking in their own right, she wanted to raise the bar even further so we faced the adjacent walls in wainscot.

Super work and gorgeous!

How about an arched ceiling between the mirrored stairs to try to tie them together?

The painted skirt boards trying to terminate themselves into the newel posts (which are not quite long enough)seems flawed (to say the least).

Your work is great however but the stair guy (or designer) screwed up this part. Unfortunately this is a central focal point of the hall.

I promise I'll take care of all those things that bother you as soon as you clear it with the designer, the client and send a check, Jim.

Well done Russell, you are like myself you do as you are told and you have no come backs. Maybe we should let Jim make all the stairs, they would then all be perfect!

OK, so I sound like a "know-it-all", my mistake. I don't know it all but I do know stairs and I liked your arched passageways and can see that this would be great for the stairs.

If your client is interested in "raising the bar" perhaps she would be interested in a little constructive suggestions.

I didn't think your suggestions were wrong at all. In fact, I agree with them, but it has little to do with the work we did, Jim? Your talking to a guy brought in by a designer, working for a client of theirs. The job was completed 3 years ago. The client is long gone. It's not a matter of being a know-it-all, it's deciding why you're responding to this post. Were you trying to tell me something about our work or did you want to show others here what you know. I can't criticize you too much here because I've done it myself. I can't tell you how many jobs I've hurt myself on because I couldn't stop myself from telling the client what was wrong with the rest of their home. I think your instincts are good and I suspect you're a good stair builder but your 'sharing skills' could use a little more thought. Just one man's opinion, Jim.

Yes you're right,I apologize. I always focus on the stairs since this is my business.

Your wainscot looks great, in fact I can't imagine these stairs without the paneling. A "before-and-after picture" would have nailed it down succinctly.
