Company Name: JK's woodshopThis is a 18"L X 6"D X 4"H box. I made the top and sides with ash and the trim, feather splines and base from walnut.
I made this for my mom as a birthday present. I am a novice woodworker with only one year of experience so I would really enjoy some feedback. I realize that it is not the most exotic choice of wood. I was trying to achive the beauty from the contrasting light/dark colors in the feather splines and a polished top. I spend a lot of time reading the postings for all of the projects on this site and I am curious to see what some of you have to say.

Hi Jeff
I think it looks great. I like the knot and the grain in the top. The contrasting woods blend nicely. Also a nice touch with the angled splines.

your mother should be proud of the work you put into it for her...

your box looks great, i can see the time and effort you put in the craftmanship of it , the work in the clear coat really paid off.

I think the choice of wood is great. Just because the tree it came from didn't grow in the tropical jungles of South America doesn't make it any less interesting. The strong grain patterns and brown streaking in ash can be very interesting and personal opinion is that it is a very underused and undervalued material. Furthermore, the walnut has a great contrasting, yet compimentary color. My final bit of praise is your choice of the top with the ingrown bark pocket. I'm willing to bet that everyone that looks at the box wants to touch that spot, and the greatest compliment anyone can give a piece of your work is to walk over and feel it, its an unspoken gesture that means they like it.

Jeff
That is an eloquent piece of work and you could not have given it to a more deserving person.

When I first saw the picture, I thought it was a very nice trunk for keeping quilts in and such. You should make this same thing, only trunk size and sell them for
$1000. a piece all day long.
Your mother was tickled to death to get this wasn't she?
I agrea with the other comment that people will want to touch that one spot. Thats a good thing.
It looks very American and for that reason again, I would make them on a larger scale using the same materials and sell them to China for BANK! Just a thought.

I just wanted to post my two cents on this as well ...
... It's a really beautiful box. Great job. I'm a novice woodworker myself and just getting into box making ... anyways, great job.
