Three arm chairs and four side chairs, the extra arm chair was for me to keep as a sample.
The table top has been fully filled and is finished with Bright rub Conversion Varnish. The base is finished with satin Lacquer as are the chairs. All the Elm Burl panels are fully filled as the burl had lots of holes. The table is 74" long by 39" wide by 30" high.
The table top has a border of Macassar Ebony with inlayed Ebony stringing on both sides and a solid Cherry frame.
There was a bit of head scratching required to work out the proper direction to cut the crest rails to get the grain to flow correctly. I made a number of quicky sample arms and crest rails to verify the grain direction was correct before cutting my final parts. It was interesting trying to get all the chairs to have similar grain and color. The seats are upholstered in very nice leather the client provided. It's quite soft and has interesting variations in color that work nicely with the Elm.
Just a side view of the arm chair to show the lines a bit. The arms added a surprising amount of work to the chairs and we went through a number of variations before finalizing the shapes.
Side chair. The chairs are all Cherry except for the one backsplat. The other two backsplats are Cherry bent laminations.
The is the prototype chair. The design evolved quite a bit as we worked out the shape of each of the parts. This one is screwed together so it could be quickly taken apart and modified. It was worth the effort to built the prototype and saved tons of time when I started cutting parts.
For anyone that's interested I found a great use for an extra belt sander. I needed a horizontal edge sander but didn't have one so the next best thing was to bolt a regular belt sander sideways to a cabinet and add a makeshift table. With a curved platen behind the belt it works amazingly well. Considering how many curved parts these chairs have I probably saved a couple weeks worth of planing and scraping by using this machine. All the parts still needed a bit of hand work and some finish sanding. Thanks for looking and I appreciate any comments.
