Where I am from the words "Spec house" and that bar would never be used in the same sentence. Wow!

Andy that is a great piece.
Just out of curiosity did you have any sleepless nights over that double curved crown?
Posted By: | andy perry |
hi vern
that crown was a dangerous animal. i did it after the shop closed up and was working alone. i live on the same property as the shop so i had the wife stand by with a box of bandaids. i only used one pattern and made the cut in one pass. allthough i stacked the wood to get my total height. i ran the first layer and then glued on the second layer of wood and ran the piece again. the second layer was the hard part. the workpiece wanted to walk off the bearing and then grab the knife. each time it stoped when i got back on the bearing but on the last pass on the last piece it threw the entire apparatus at me. no harm done to me or the machine but that's a sizable chunk of wood to be flying across the shop. check out my post on the curved crown post on 3/7 in the architectutal ww forum.

I'm interested in the finish...did you just put a black stain all over? What type stain and type of finish coat? Looks great from here...

hi
i made about 20 samples and because this was for a friend he let me do what i wanted. his wife wanted black cabs but the black mlc wiping stain was just to plain for us. so i tried different dyes and toners for depth and colur. we settled on a process- black wiping stain -seal- black glaze -seal -top coat with mah. dye to impart a little red cast to the wood that had be obsecred by the black stain and glaze- top coat in simi gloss clear no dye.we did the master bath in the black but then the mlc rep showed in the shop one day and said he could simplify the process. he sent black wiping stain with gilisinite (sp) in it. this cut out the glazing step but everything else was bacially the same.

this is the type of work that is making me get into this field, great job. I have been working with a carpenter since I was young and I am a pretty good craftsman. I am a teacher by day. what advice would you give to someone just starting and what are my essential tools I need to start with?
