The sketch
The pile of parts with prototype chair in the background. Lots of mortise and tenon work and at this point you're really just hoping it all fits together. ; )
An armchair ready for assembly
A close up of the crest rail. All the chairs were finished with many coats of Sutherland and Welles wiping varnish.
The seats were sculpted with a 7" angle grinder and then faired with a 5" ROS with a foam backing pad.
Armchair. In an effort to streamline production while machining so many parts it was easy to forget that sometimes hand tools are the best option. I found this to be the case with the arm to leg joinery which decided to cut after the rest of the chair was assembled.
The complete set, four armchairs and four side chairs. Well actually, since I was at it I really built five of each so that I could keep a pair for myself. Hopefully in a few years I will have entire set of mismatched chairs in my dining room.
Side profile
This was a fun project and my first go at a full set of chairs. There was definitely a learning curve but I look forward to building another set and to further explore the design aspect.
