This kitchen renovation was originally planned on being a simple project, just to replace “cheap builder grade” cabinets with stained wood flat panel doors and granite counter tops. Unfortunately as it often happens, one’s appetite for more tends to kick in and we end up going overboard a bit. To be honest though, this project was never intended to bring a profit, more of a test of our RTA ready-to-assemble capacity for fast part building and installation of fully finished cabinet parts.

I spent more than 25 years in woodworking/cabinetry building and design, but in 2007 I closed my own shop and moved into the online cabinetry business of promoting other custom cabinetmakers. To stay in shape and not let my belly grow too much, I like to get my hands dirty and lately it’s been with our RTA systems, and personally doing finishes.

There is nothing too unusual about this project, nor is it far from reality. The parts were manufactured 100% in a rented shop (Henige’s Custom Woodworking), delivered flat pack using my Toyota Matrix (90 miles one way few trips) and fully assembled and installed in house, with the help of an 8 year old. The granite cuts were ordered using dimensional drawings; the granite guy visited the job for about 10 min to confirm dimensions. From A to Z, the job was done in less than 3 calendar months by one person, not counting the granite work.

I am sharing with you what I have in images and asking for a friendly estimate of this kitchen (just for my girlfriend's curiosity) and overall thoughts on the project. Thanks to all of you upfront.

Very nice work! I'm just not a fan of those angled doors.

Looks really good!! I especially like the arched entry way. So how much would something like this run? Is this the only RTA project or do you have more on your website?

Thank you guys. Jeff and Michael - any numbers for the cost to build the project like that for profit?

Sorry Michael, I missed your second part of the question. Yes we succeed to make just an amazing sale over the internet, over $27K to Calgary, Canada. I have a plan to show the project in a week or two here and at my site.

Beautiful job, like every aspect of the job. What was your finishing schedule on this job??
Posted By:Vlad
I like to work with sapele, especially to finish. The finishing was pretty easy; light staining, primer, light glazing into the corners mostly, and final coat of conversion varnish S-W. Time is about three weeks, and total around 80 parts including doors and panels.

Hey Vlad I checked out your website. It's very nice. My number's for CA, not installed around 27k. If you can build for me for 22k (FOB) "flat pack" I'm ready to sign in and follow your instructions for measuring and assembly. I'll shoot you an email over the weekend.

Michael, thank you for being brave with your numbers. My guess you spent some time to go over the project, for well-organized shops it is pretty real numbers. I have no problem to explore my own estimate in details, but let’s wait for any other our colleges “brave shooter”? Thanks.

In the middle of the country (Kansas) that would be between a 12 and 14k job.
Posted By:Vlad
Jeff, oh no!? How is it possible? Here materials alone are more than 6K. I will e-mail to you for more details. Thanks.

Here, in the middle of the country, this would be a $30K+ job.

Larry, thank you.
27k installed and quality to the level of Rolls-Royce. Thanks again.

10k in Seattle.nobody appreciates craftsmanship anymore only the bottom line matters. Nice work esp. On the finish its rare u see that sheen but it looks crystal clear

Lovely. And sorry to say “nobody appreciates craftsmanship anymore”… is absolute BS. Totally apposite; we are doing without any compromise for reasonable price, our product flying to France or Australia, and all over US. If you want to know how it works… - be creative.
