so, Rietveld was an interesting character. He was the son of a cabinetmaker for a start. This chair was designed about 100 years ago. The goal was: a chair and other items that could be massed produced. Not like we think today of mass production from a factory, but a chair so simple to build, that the mass population could build this chair from locally available wood and plywood. That's right, people would just build their own furniture. Rietveld later adapted the colors of the Red and Blue chair as a modernist exercise, a sort of 3 dimensional Mondrian painting.
