So, I was given a challenge a few years back to design a working piano puzzle.
The metrics were that the piano had to be able to play music normally, ...the last 7 notes in the song were the unlock keys, ...hitting any wrong note while playing the "unlocking procession of notes" would reset the whole thing, ...you must be able to strike a "lock" and "unlock" key at the same time and not be able to feel "conflict" between the keys, ...no matter which wrong key is hit, it must uniformly reset the locking system, ...and you musn't be able to hear the mechanics at work while playing the notes.
I will say that it took a little while to get that part sorted out, but once past there it rolled along pretty smooth. For material, I used the finest Luthiers grade Curly Maple and some basic Walnut for contrast.
In the end it takes 78 moves to find the hidden treasure burried within the top part of the chest. However, to get there you must solve your way through the lower half to find all the keys and clues to further yourself along to where you can finally enter the top lid.
Oh, ...I forgot to mention, ...I am not musical, ...at all. As my Gran put it, "boy, you don't have a beat in your garden". ; )
Pretty happy with the results, and if you would like to see the final solution being demonstrated at the link below.

A second video was made by the owner, and you can see a close up description of how the piano locking system works.
