Geometric Stair and Rail

Listing #4587 Listed on: 05/11/2015 Company Name: 18th Century Handrail
Name: Jim Baldwin Member

Remodeled stair plan which allows for continuous handrail from top to bottom with no goose-neck transitions or other handrail interruptions.

The goal is to re-create a 19th century sculptured geometric stair. The volute is intentionally large so that it may become part of the curved handrail and not seen as an attached fitting.

Traditional handrail layout methods are required in order to achieve graceful and complimentary curves from one segment to the next.

The end results are yet to be seen but the hardest handrail part is done and ready for shipping. If it doesn't fit just perfect it will come right back and I'll have to shoot myself.

Excellent work. I can tell it was a challenging design. Curves are always tough. What is the wood type?

African mahog thank God and not that ipe flooring stuff. Why do folks think that wood has to match like wall paper?

Beautiful work, Jim. I'll be carving my first one this month. I can only hope it comes out as nice. How many hours did you put into that?

To be honest Eric, this is mostly machine-shaped (not CNC)while the carving tools are for the bolted joints. Still, this represents a full weeks' work which includes layout and patterns.

Now someone usually chimes-in that their 5 axis CNC thingy knocks these out in an hour or two...

(And Yes I've seen the video but this ain't like that, believe me.)

Anyway good luck with your assignment and email me if you get stuck or want to chat. My first volute was forty years back or so.
