This is a personal project that I've been working on since last December between paying commissions. Matter of fact, it was stored in our guest bathroom bathtub because I ran out of space in the shop!
It's my original design and made of Genuine Mahogany. My inspiration for this piece was Thos. Moser's Dr. Whites Chest but I wanted to break up the monolithic appearance of that piece -- my solution was the three steps for the top. Over-all dimensions are 74" tall by 19" deep and 48.5" wide.
My goal was to use traditional construction through out so drawers slide on an Alder drawer web, Alder was also used for the drawer bottoms. The secondary wood is Soft Maple. The main wood used was 8/4 Genuine Mahogany. You may be able to see that the door panels have birds-eye, something I didn't know you'd find in Mahogany! Draw bored, mortise and tenon joints (Walnut pegs) make up most of the frame work plus the dovetails you see for the bottom two rails. Front and back frames are the same except the back has a Mahogany ply panel. Glue up was tricky, there were 20 or so joints needed to attach the sides to the front and back plus each of the drawer runners were mortised/tenoned. These were left loose in case adjustments were needed.
You can read about the planning and construction of this piece on my website, enter the tag term of John's Armoire.
I figured that if Thos Moser can name his armoire after a client then I can proudly name mine "John's Armoire"!
