Murphy Bed

The Customer had a large Sugar Maple in his yard that had to come down. He had it sawn and dried, and asked us to build a Murphy Bed. We were able to use straight quartered Maple for the frames and the swirly stuff for the panels.

Nice work. I know I would have been challenged by making raised panels with the figured maple. I struggle with keeping cut smooth,with no tear out or going too slow and getting burns. Care to share your method?

Certainly. We use a 3 wing disc - The Innovator - from Chas Schmidt Tooling at:

http://www.cggschmidt.com

It has interchangeable corrugated HSS knives that are available pre ground to certain profiles or you can buy blanks and grind your own. We grind our own and now have about 25 patterns we can make. We even have made some cope and stick knives. Since the Innovator is about 5" in diameter, we have room to fit a tenon between the shoulder cut and the spindle.

We keep them sharp, or touch them up before setups, and we never see any burns.

The head is run at 8,000RPM on SCMI T130 with about 7.5 hp, and we use a standard 3 wheel feeder on slow to feed it all. We like to cut from the top, also.

Thanks for the response. Two follow up question (if you don't mind) what is your feed rate in feet/min and can you do it in one pass?
