The railing surrounding the loft opening was made from the floor joists of the builing. The building was completed in 1870. The Southern Yellow and White pine was first cut. The hand rail & post going up the short staircase is American Chestnut. The large posts were salvaged from a horse barn in Lexington, KY. The gated area is to allow for furniture to be moved from the 2nd floor 14' below. The bottom of the gate is locked in place using a 3/4"x12" steel pin in addition to the gate lock at the top.
