The T&G sounds strange until you see the finished full veiw, then it works. The only thing I can offer on the "problem area" is that it looks better than the varnish around it. If the varnish is not adhered to the epoxy maybe you could lift it all back off with tape.
That is a really nice table.
I wish I was that creative.
