3mm Pvc Breaking

10/20/2016

From original questioner:

Has anyone had trouble with 3mm pvc edgebanding breaking as it is applied to the edge of a panel. We are applying a woodgrain pvc for a commercial project. We have a Holzher 1310 bander and as soon as the guillotine cuts the tape it breaks right after the pressure roller. We had 1 old roll of the tape from 2years ago that worked fine but once we started with a new roll then our troubles began. Any thoughts.

I would guess at dull blade on guillotine that is not cutting all the way thru or something keeping it from making full cycle (check pin that connects guillotine to cylinder). the edge is probably breaking because the edge stops moving when guillotine is trying to cut and edge then snaps.

Rich. Thanks for the response. The tape always breaks right behind the main pressure roller. As I said a roll that was old stock had no trouble, the new rolls we just recieved are breaking. It seems like its in the pvc roll itself.

Some PVC is quite hard but I've never had it crack on the bander. To see if it is the PVC, try bending it in your hands. I can't tell from the image, but could the guillotine be sort of "pre-firing." As tough as 3mm is I'd be surprised if it could be pulled hard enough by a dull knife to crack it, but...? At any rate you could take the knife out and hone the bevel enough to get a really sharp edge. Look @ the flat side and see if it shows any rounding in a bright light, same on the anvil.
