Can You Sand And Repaint Over Veneer??

07/31/2012

From original questioner:

I recently installed several hundred square feet of low tac stickers for a trade show at a Hotel in New Orleans. When we removed it there were a few places that it had removed the paint. This was on a painted veneer surface. I don't understand how the paint would peel in just those spots. Now the hotel tells me that this can't be repaired by sanding and painting and that the panels have to be completely replaced. This does not make sense to me. Any ideas?

Honestly, it doesn't have to make sense to you, you caused the damage. It looks like the paint was barely bonded. I would guess that when someone started sanding, the old paint would roll up on the sandpaper and make feathering out the damage next to impossible. Not to mention all the sanding dust in a working hotel. Bad deal, sorry!

Is the panel veneer or plastic laminate. in the last pic it looks like a pink nebula color laminate. Which the paint didn't bond to and it peeled off.
What ever you end up doing take pics all the way through.

It is a veneer. The hotel says the veneer actually peeled off. Does anyone know someone who can repair this in the New Orleans area?
