Choosing Flute Compression Bit Size

I usually run a 1/2" compression 2 flute @ 20 meters per minute (18k spindle) on my weeke nested router for melamine. I usually get good results on both the faces and core.

I have a production run coming 100's of sheets with only a handful of dedicated patterns. I want the fastest cut I can get on these without sacrificing any quality. All of these parts are getting 0.5mm banding which shows any issues with the core.

When I tried a 3/8" 3 flute bit at the recommended chip load, the core was pulling. Will I get a better result with a 1/2" bit?

I'm even considering 3 passes; one through the center of the kerf between parts, then an onion skin pass along each part taking off 0.5mm along the full edge of each part.

I'm very interested in the forums experience here.

We have been return onion skinning lately for hold (40HP Vac Pump) and performance of cutting @ outrageous speeds with melamine and laminated panels. The edge is great, dust is down and the banding looks better than before. Vortex 3130 XP from

+1 on vortex. We run 800 to 1000 inches per minute on 3/4" melamine. My operator is complaining its running to fast and he can't keep up.
